Thunder Bay is located on the western shore of Lake Superior and is often referred to as the "Gateway to the West". Standing on the shores of Thunder Bay at the head of the great Lake Superior, one can perceive, on looking out across the waters of Thunder Bay, a great land formation situated directly in the mouth of the Bay. The formation is part of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park where dramatic steep cliffs are among the highest in Ontario at 240 metres. The southernmost point is known as Thunder Cape and has been depicted by many early Canadian artists. It requires no imagination whatsoever to see that this majestic form resembles the sleeping body of a giant, arms folded across his massive chest as in the majesty of death. An Ojibway legend identifies the Sleeping Giant as Nanabijou, who was turned to stone when the secret location of a rich silver mine was disclosed.
